5 Oozey Half-Baked Cheese Tarts in Hong Kong You Should Save For A Rainy Day

Food craze comes and goes, but there are some life-changing inventions that will be here to stay. A few months ago, half-baked cheese tarts invaded the hearts and palettes of Hong Kong people, and they show no signs of leaving any time soon. I mean, gooey, creamy, puffy cheese in a buttery cookie tart… What’s not to love?

1 Signature Soft-Centered Cheese Tarts @ Bake Cheese Tart

The OG of half-baked cheese tarts, BAKE CHEESE TART arguably brought the trend to our city first. Originated from a store in Hokkaido called Kinotoya, their signature soft-centered cheese tarts ($20HKD) are made with three kinds of cheese and crumbly cookie pastry that was baked twice.

It’s conveniently located inside SOGO, but get ready to queue! P.S. Each customer is limited to 12 tarts, so if you’re bulk buying, don’t forget to bring a friend.

2 Half-Baked Cheesecake @ Hanjuku Kobo 半熟工房

As soon as the craze began, this local bakery decided they wanted to enter the race too. Before their physical shop opened in Tsim Sha Tsui, they were already selling their cheesecakes in Hoixe Cake Shops all over town. Their cheese tarts ($22HKD), though made with one less kind of cheese, have a better crunch and buttery taste.

Plus, they also come in matcha flavour! However, I personally prefer their half-baked cheesecakes.

3 Popular Cheese Tarts @ Candy Shake

If the two bakeries mentioned above win with their cheese, Candy Shake probably takes the cake for their variety. Apart from the popular cheese tarts ($18HKD), they also have the potato, chocolate, taro or coffee flavoured variations.

While you’re there though, don’t miss out on their durian ice-cream or Ferrero Rocher milkshake either.

4 Lava Cheese Tarts @ Maxim’s Cake Lab

You probably know Maxim’s for their fast food chains or their bread shops. But their new concept store focuses on western baked goods like pretty pastries, delicious cakes, and… You guessed it. Lava cheese tarts. ($14HKD)

Their rendition is marginally cheaper than its counterparts elsewhere, but the quality is just as good if not better. Their cheese is slightly on the sour side, but you’ll get all the goodness oozing out for the price of a drink.

5 Matcha Cheese Tarts @ Gozen

Matcha fans need no introduction to Gozen. After opening a café next door serving up traditional Japanese desserts, Gozen decided to open their bakery branch to satisfy the pastry fans.

Their signature creative items include matcha pineapple buns (ice cream optional but highly recommended), matcha spam buns, and matcha honeydew buns. Oh, did I forget something? Oh yes. Matcha cheese tarts.
