Lamma Island
The quiet and unique lifestyle of Lamma Island is such a rarity to find in a city, which never sleeps. Its name originally comes from an error made by Alexander Dalrymple, where he mistook the word lama for the name of the island, but it soon caught on in the community. With a law preventing any building from being over three stories tall, you really feel like you’re miles away from the city. As the third largest island in Hong Kong, there’s plenty to do!
The island has two piers at either side, one to the main town, Yung Shue Wan, which contains restaurants, shops and Hung Shing Ye Beach. The other pier is at Sok Kwu Wan, which is a much quieter side, with a couple of seafood restaurants, Tin Hau Temple and smaller beaches around the area. What is great about this island is that you can take a 45-minute scenic walk across the hilltops to get to either side perfect for if you want a full day out.
This seaside location has a very hippy feel to it, which can be noticed in the quirky and individual shops. Similar to the shops you can find in Thailand or other Asian holiday destinations, they sell clothing, accessories and handmade jewellery., which are beautiful to browse around at.
Where to eat:
If you choose to take a walk around the island, you won’t be limited with snack choices along your journey. With a little pop-up refreshment shop up the hill, serving coconuts and frozen treats, you can take a break and cool down after a tiring walk. Along Hung Shing Ye Beach there is also a little shack offering more snacks such as grilled and frozen pineapple depending on how hot the weather is.
Since Lamma is one of Hong Kong’s more westernised islands, there is a wide selection of multicultural cuisines from Thai to Italian. These restaurants offer not only tourists a choice but also the residents, as the island has a very international population. Many of the restaurants are located along the waterfront in the main town and they offer outdoor seating to give you a beautiful sea view while you enjoy your meal.
I decided to try out Hideout, an all day brunch restaurant located on the waterfront towards to end of the town. They have a large selection of savoury choices that all breakfast lovers would enjoy, from waffles to salmon bagels. This place is perfect for if you’re staying the night on the island in one of the many hotels or accommodations that are on offer. You can watch the sunrise on the outside terrace while eating some delicious breakfast, the perfect start to your day.
