6 great ways to enjoy the Christmas holidays in HK

Now that the weather has cooled down and the Christmas holidays have began, it’s time to step out of your old routines and experience all Hong Kong has to offer. It can be difficult to come up with things to do each day, but I’m here to help!

Instead of fighting your way through crowded shopping malls or desperately searching for a new cocktail bar, you can relax and enjoy some of the wonderful delights this city has to offer during the festive period.

1. Go on a hike

Grab your friends or family and take a break from the city life by retreating up the hills on one of Hong Kong’s many hiking trails. Not only will it help you burn off some of those Christmas treats, it’s also a great way to relax and clear your mind of all the panicked plans of last minute shopping for presents. Some great hikes in the new territories and on the island are:

2. Watch a show

Nothing gets you in the Christmas spirit quite like watching a show; it’s just something about sitting back with a glass of mulled wine and enjoying a performance. The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre hold annual Christmas shows or performances, during the months of December and January.

3. Have a Picnic

If you’re looking to take a little break from eating out or just need an excuse to use up those Christmas dinner leftovers, a picnic is the perfect day out. While usually a summer activity, Hong Kong’s winter temperatures are perfect for lounging on the grass and basking in the sunshine. You also don’t have to worry about bugs or flies either as they are in hibernation. Perfect picnic places include:

4. Eat a Christmas themed afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is always a delicious treat, but when you have cakes and nibbles in the shape of all your favourite Christmas things, it’s just even better. Many of the hotels around Hong Kong offer exquisite Christmas themed tea sets ranging from $200 to $800 for two. Perfect for if you want to treat someone to something special in place of a present.

5. Explore an island

Just a 30-minute ferry ride can export you from the hustle and bustle of the city to the calmness of the surrounding islands. You can take the day to explore their traditional villages and natural landscapes which can easily be overlooked in day-to-day life. There is an island for everyone’s taste such as Lamma Island for cute and quirky shops and Cheung Chau for an adventure in a pirates cave. More islands to visit are:

6. Visit a theme park/ Carnival at Christmas

Theme parks are fun all year around, but during the Christmas season they are extra special. With decorations lining every surface and carols blasting from the speakers, it’s hard not to get in the festive spirit. They make the perfect day out for kids and adults alike.

Merry Christmas!
