Guide to Hong Kong Kwun Tong

kwun tong metro

Once an old industrial area, Kwun Tong is being revitalized to become an incubator for the growing art scene. Get creative and meet the new face of the district.

11.30am

Visit Mut Wah Street, also known as the “Golden Street” for its jewellery shops, in the town centre. Despite the recent rebranding of the town as seen in the surrounding office buildings and new commercial centres, this part of Kwun Tung still retains its unique local character.

Head over to Shui Wo Street where you can find the traditional wet market and experience the grassroots side of Hong Kong life. Set in the heart of the district, you can keep your eye out for the best quality fresh produce here. After navigating the myriad stalls in this indoor market, go up and enjoy a hot, tasty meal at the cooked food centre. The cleanliness of the center, the friendliness of the staff and the relatively cheap price of cuisine enhance the entire local food experience.

2pm

Kwun Tong is well-known for its product manufacturing factories. The “industrial revolution” of the district sees the artsy wave that brings a fresh dose of creative energy into dining experiences and turns spacious industrial areas into hip cool restaurants.

Wanna see the creative side of the culinary scene in Kwun Tong?

Check out Kowloon East Kitchen which hides inside a shabby building for surprisingly high-quality food and ambience; 8104 A Box of Life for a homey lunch; or Factory 99 for a quick bite.

Alternatively, visit Scool Café on Hing Yip Street. Located inside an industrial building, the self-served Taiwanese restaurant has a chic-meets-art-deco style of interior design that you’d find cool and comfy to stay in for the afternoon. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you travel back in time to when you were just a student. Why? Because the décor is designed like a classroom, with wooden classroom desks and chairs, and comic books on bookshelves. And even the waiters and waitresses are dressed in school uniforms!

4.30pm

Enjoy a little walk along Ngau Tau Kok Road and explore more of the north side of Kwun Tong District. Ngau Tau Kok is largely a residential area, with a number of industrial buildings too.

5pm

Enjoy a local custard tart just before you head towards Kwun Tong Bypass and walk along the Kwun Tong Promenade. Don’t miss the Sun Museum by the waterfront to enjoy the collection of Chinese paintings and related art at the exhibition.
