Guide to Hong Kong – Yuen Long Edition

If you are getting bored in going to the urban areas like Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and the Peak, Yuen Long is one good choice for your consideration. Yuen Long is located in the north-west side of Hong Kong.

If you are starting from Tsim Sha Tsui, it takes around 30 minute to go there by MTR. Thus, the only way to explore Yuen Long is wake up earlier for your trip.

9am

Start your trip with a healthy morning walk along Yuen Long Kau Hui Road from MTR Yuen Long Station exit G2. There are many old villages near MTR Yuen Long Station. You can see another side of apartment in Hong Kong, not only skyscrapers, but also traditional villages.

For going to Nam Seng Wai, you need to take Nam Sang Wai paid ferry in Yuen Long Old Town, which is a small wooden ferry with 4 – 5 people as maximum capacity at once. It is the only river-crossing ferry in Hong Kong. After you have taken off the ferry and walk around 15 minutes, you will see a path lined with tall River Red Gum trees.

Many movies and television programmes are taken from there. If you would like to have a quick view of Nam Sang Wai, it takes around 1.5 hour. For the quick view trip, please turn back after visiting River Red Gum trees. If you would like to continue walking through the whole Nam Sang Wai, it takes around 3.5 hours. You can see a variety of birds and wetland.

Going back to Yuen Long station and walk along Castle Peak Road – Yuen Long, you will see a street called Yau Sun Street. There are many localised food, for instance, skewer, dumplings and marinated chicken wings. Furthermore, you can buy some food for family and friends.

After the 2-hour walk in Nam Seng Wai, it is the time to have a break for eating bean curd. King Fai Farm is a farm with various animals like goat, rabbit and koi.

It is time to have a delicious lunch in Yuen Long. There are many shops provide a large variety of food. Just pick one you are interested to try.

2.30pm

Once you have eaten your lunch, it is recommended to explore Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda and Ping Shan Heritage Trail. It is the unique ancient pagoda in Hong Kong. To go there, you can take around 6-minutes train in the MTR West Rail Line to Tin Shui Wai Station.

6pm

For dinner, it is suggested to try rustic village food in Tai Wing Wah restaurant. The popular dishes are 5 spices chicken and Malay Cake.
