Top of the town – Ice Cream in Hong Kong

Nothing is as gratifying as having ice-cream as the perfect accompaniment on the scorching summer days. With our latest finds, you all would wholeheartedly agree that bikini season can wait because these creamy delights are just too hard to beat.

MUNCHIES

What’s in it?

Salted Caramel ice cream.

The waitress looked startled and asked, “just a scoop of salted caramel ice-cream?”

My eyes were then on the shelf and I saw a wide selection of donuts and cookies. Who would rather have a single scoop when you can pair with these noms of your choice?

“Oh no. I’d have a chocolate chunk cookie and an earl grey cookie to go with the ice-cream, please.”

What makes it so special?

The delicious blend of the salty and sweet alongside the buttery cookie bites is just perfect. The scoop is rich and silky smooth but not indulgently sweet – each bite is always better than the last.

The chocolate cookie never disappoints as the chew of the dough gives you the right kind of gooey comfort. And that earl grey flavoured cookie! The distinctive tea taste is delicate, and gives a fresh touch to everything that melts in your mouth.

Overall, the cookie ice-cream sandwich decadent and luscious, and finger-licking-ly good.

Why we love it?

Because at Munchies, we are spoilt for choices. We can choose from a range of ice-cream flavours, donut flavours (from maple walnut and to glazed crumble to smores!) and cookie flavours (apparently they’ve got stuffed nutella and more…)The shop will change the menu from time to time and tweak their recipes. What’s cooler in summer than being able to customize our ice-cream experience making each one unique?!

XTC Gelato

What’s in it?

With low-fat dark chocolate/ strawberry ice-cream nestled in between densely chocolate-flavored cookies, the gelato cookie sandwiches taste as rich as they literally sound.

What makes it so special?

If you have an affinity to chocolate like I do, chocolate on chocolate is your indulgent take and please, feel no guilty about eating it. Valrhona dark chocolate from France spreads a strong chocolate aroma, together with the cookies that are chewy and thick are sure to put you in good mood. After all, there’s nothing that chocolate can’t solve.

The strawberry-flavoured cookie sandwich, on the other hand is refreshingly fruity. Surprisingly the ice-cream and the cookies do not outdo each other but play good harmony – although I’d expect more strawberry flesh, the natural taste of fresh strawberries remain and balance the sweet and sour. The result of having two flavours mingling in your mouth is heavenly.

Why we love it?
XTC at Star Ferry terminal is a quiet shop with two seats where you can sit by the window. Through the window your mind wander to wonder what’s happening outside the shop, while the aftertaste of the sweetness and freshness that lingers in your mouth: Young talents busking during the weekend; locals and expats getting on and off buses, in and out of the ferry terminals; tourists are busy snapping the perfect shot of the view of Victoria harbor. It goes without saying that this is one of the cool ways to beat the heat, and the crowd.

Meanwhile the ice cream melts in your mouth but the sensation prolongs.
