Panda Peeks – Supafood

Supafood

“I totally regret eating healthy today. Said no one ever.”
This was the sign that greeted me when I walked over to Supafood to pick up my lunch. After two weekends of stuffing my face and tummy with sweet Christmas hams, gooey raclette cheese, crispy bubbly champagne and decadent chocolate cakes – eating healthily is definitely a better choice for me (at least for the first week of January 2017)!

Have I gone mad opting to eat healthy today? Supafood has been a hit with our fitness-crazed colleagues in the office – but it is still an odd choice for a couch potato (whose favourite sport is hunting down the best fried chicken in town) like me. Nonetheless, this meal completely changed my mind about eating healthy! It was so delicious that I would definitely come back for a second, or third helping! Read on to find out what rocked my tummy.

1. Organic Turmeric Pumpkin Ginger Soup

Faced with the daunting choices of quinoa, kale, chia (items that are not usually in my meal choices)… I decided to start my supa-lunch with something familiar. I ordered the organic pumpkin soup, supa-charged with turmeric and ginger ($50). The flavours were reminiscent of the pumpkin soup that my university housemate used to cook up to power our long and dreadful thesis-writing nights. Besides being comforting on a chilly day, the turmeric and ginger in this soup are anti-oxidants and are packed with anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a great choice for my digestive tract after two indulgent weekends!

2. Baked Wild Caught Halibut with Honey Sriracha

Okay… So I decided to cheat a little and opted for honey sriracha sauce instead of tomato salsa in this Baked Wild Caught Halibut with Honey Sriracha ($130). The honey sriracha pleasantly complemented the flavours of the fresh halibut and pumpkin (I love pumpkin!) and the Thai inspired Asian slaw in this dish gave it a slightly sweet crunch. The quinoa mix (organic quinoa, organic apple, pomegranate, coriander) was not at all daunting for my junk-food-tastebuds! Being light and refreshing, I finished this dish faster than any roast goose rice (ok, I may be exaggerating here, but it was pretty fast).

3. Coconut Chia Seed Pudding

The saying goes that everyone has a second tummy for dessert. I have heard many good things about chia seeds so I was pleasantly surprised to find this Coconut Chia Seed Pudding ($48) in the Supafood menu! It has organic chia seeds, coconut milk, almond milk, organic coconut nectar, granola mix and mixed fruits. The pudding was similar to the sago desserts that I enjoy from time to time, except that this would be really good for my digestive system while giving me lots of energy to face the post-holiday working week! I especially enjoyed the crunchiness of the granola mix and the organic coconut nectar – it made me feel like I was snacking on chocolate bits, even if I wasn’t!

4. Smoothies!

I had asked a colleague to come along with me and she decided to grab a smoothie as well. Despite the chilly weather, we ordered the Berry Happy ($68) with organic acai berry, blue berry, organic banana, organic coconut nectar and coconut water, and the Choco Luv ($68) with organic cacao, organic peanut butter, organic rice protein, almond milk.

The Berry Happy was a delightful summer’s dream without being too heavy. But what really surprised us was Choco Luv! Despite the ingredients sounding like a body builder’s dream, this smoothie can only be described as a resurrected healthy peanut butter cup in liquid form.

5. Bonus: Carrot Cake Supaball

So I lied when I said I have a second tummy for dessert, when I have three. I just had to try this Carrot Cake Supaball ($18), made of organic carrot, organic oats, cashew, raisins, cinnamon, ginger powder, organic coconut nectar, organic flax seeds. The little ball form reminded me of rum balls from my childhood bakeries – without the guilt! Supafood’s supaballs are perfect for boosting your afternoon if you are looking for a quick snack, or as a pre-workout snack.

Now that I have stuffed my face again with healthier choices, I feel ready to face 2017! May your 2017 be healthy and happy as well. Also, if you are looking to start working out again, here is a curated list of top gyms in Hong Kong.
