There is a saying (or rather, my own theory) that no sadness in the world cannot be cured by Japanese food. Having faced the mid-week blues, we decided to cheer ourselves up with a warm meal from Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant at Man Yee Building on Des Voeux Road Central. An established brand with several outlets across Asia, Watami Restaurant is well known for serving quality Japanese food at great prices. The Man Yee branch is fitted with spacious booth seating, which is what we needed after a long day at work. We were completely at ease as we sank our tired bones into the comfy seats, surrounded by happy customers huddling over steaming hot pots at dinner time.
1. Assorted Sashimi (3 kinds)
Sashimi was definitely on the top of our to-eat list. This assorted plate ($98) was perfect for sharing. Statistically, most people prefer salmon over tuna sashimi. But these people have never tried the tuna sashimi from Watami! Surprisingly smooth as butter and without any strong fishy taste, the tuna sashimi practically melted in my mouth! My colleague and I were fighting over the last piece of tuna sashimi. Luckily for us, the ebi (prawn) sashimi was equally fresh and sweet so we settled for sharing half of the tuna and ebi!
2. Salmon and Avocado Sushi Roll
Salmon and avocado are a match made in heaven. Roll them up with sushi rice and seaweed, and we have the most satisfying sushi roll ever! We ordered a half portion of the Salmon and Avocado Sushi Roll (Half ($38)/Full ($68)) and instantly regretted not getting the full roll. But we had more dishes coming so we let our mistake pass – just this time round.
3. Hokkaido Seafood Hot Pot
Hokkaido is an island in northern Japan, famous for their amazingly high quality seafood caught from the cold waters during the winter season. Being the winter season, it is of little wonder that Watami rolled out a special menu featuring all kinds of seafood dishes from Hokkaido! We decided to order the hotpots to warm our bellies. First up was the Hokkaido Seafood Hot Pot (Small ($73)/Large ($103)). The medley of salmon, snow crab legs, scallops, clams and squid certainly represented Hokkaido’s various seafood offerings – and pleasantly infused the flavours into the piping hot soup. We slurped up every spoonful of soup there is!
4. Seafood Sumo Wrestler’s Hot Pot
Sumo wrestlers may appear really large, but in reality, they adhere to a rigid diet consisting of good protein (meats, seafood and tofu) and vegetables, cooked in a rich stock in a claypot (also known as Chanko-nabe). While most of us are not sumo-wrestlers, there is no reason not to enjoy this delicious and healthy dish! We ordered the Seafood Sumo Wrestler’s Hot Pot (Small ($68)/Large ($98)). Similar to the Hokkaido Seafood Hot Pot, it featured snow crabs, squid and scallops. It also had tofu and rice noodles, which perfectly soaked up the spicy soup base (which we requested for).
We finished our meal with much satisfaction and a promise to come back for more salmon and avocado sushi. The food from Watami Japanese Casual Restaurant was certainly the remedy for our mid-week blues. Try it yourself today!
