Top of the Town – 3 Best Places for Kimchi in Hong Kong

kimchi

Anyoung haseyo is hello in Korean, which majority of us are aware of. I know this because I am not the only one watching Korean television series. They produce some extremely addictive shows but moreover, they are always having Korean food and I wish I were in the show just for their food. However, I am thankful that I am in Hong Kong, which makes it so easy for Korean lovers like me to get their never-ending cravings.

Korea Kam Sing Restaurant

Tsim Sha Tsui has plenty of restaurants but this one particularly has my attention. It feels like I am in one of the houses in the television series. I sat down and wasted no time as I ordered my favourite, kimchi pot soup with rice.

What’s in it?
The pot of tempting red soup is filled with flavours from kimchi, tofu, enoki, turnip, cabbages, green onions and pork. Kimchi as we know is a fermented Korean side dish, a well-known Korean tradition. It is made of vegetables with a mixture of various seasonings. Therefore, when all the ingredients are added to a boiling pot, this delicious dish is made.

What’s the highlight?
The colour of the soup might scare half of us away, but trust me; it is what our taste buds need. It is in a jet-black pot that highlights the kimchi soup. The soup is filled with the combination of all the ingredients yet you can taste a tinge of each separately; enjoy every part of the soup one by one. The surprise is in spite of the thorough boiling of the soup; every single ingredient is still rich with flavour. After that just take a spoonful of the soup and another of the rice because that is how it is done.

Why we love it?
As I know the Korean traditions, before my order was ready, I was surved with four appetizers; kimchi, fried tofu, stir fried vermicelli with green onion and thinly slice fish glazed with soya sauce and topped with stripes of cucumber in sesame seeds. You would think they are just to kill the waiting time but no, they themselves are a treat. I was afraid I’d be full before my actual order came. Thankfully, they are in small dishes.

MeokBang Korean BBQ & Bar

I have had my kimchi pot soup so, this time something different. Do you notice this dish Korean actors make in shows when they are lazy, simply by mixing a bunch of cooked ingredients together in a bowl. Well, I thought why not try the lazy dish as I call it. It always looks delicious, as I am a slave when it comes to tingling my tongue.

What’s in it?
A sizzling pot with rice, thinly sliced cucumbers and carrots, boiled cabbages, bean sprouts, small seaweed, thin pieces of chicken and a freshly boiled egg yolk topped with sesame seeds. If that is still not enough then you have a sweet and sour sauce to mix with the dish. Then get to work with the mixing and it feels great to know I had a hand in making the dish. (Well, sort of ). Once you are done, take a bite and feel the mixture in your mouth, it’s a pleasure.

What’s the highlight?
Although the dish looked simple and easy, every sliced vegetable and meat is given time to cook which can be told when they sit on your tongue. The simplicity is remarkable and I know I am getting this dish again soon.

Why we love it?
Apart from the food, the staff always adds to the whole experience. I knew what I wanted but I could not recall the name. I explained it to the waiter and he understood what I wanted right away. We all are very critical with the things we want when we are hungry, sometimes even a little pain. The patience of the waiter was to applaud for.

Mr. Korea BBQ

As the name mentions, it is the best place for Korean BBQ, has an authentic decor. I mean other than kimchi, Korean BBQ is what we know Korea for. I know we all love our barbeques during the holidays with friends or family. However, the meat here is marinated in a secret sauce that you got to try in order to understand.

What’s in it?
I ordered the marinated pork short ribs and cooked chicken wings. The raw ribs are extremely fresh and a thick cut. It is nicely marinated and covered with tiny cut green onions. For the convenience of the eaters, the short ribs look in one piece but are already sliced. Once the fire was on, I waited for a bit and then started with my barbeque.

What’s the highlight?
In spite of the name of the restaurant, both barbequed and cooked dishes are a delight. I love the chicken wings. The chicken wings are tender, skin smooth and oozing with flavour. Do not even think of forgetting the taste of the barbeque short pork ribs. The pork is soft, juicy and rich in taste. Dip a slice into the spicy and sour sauce then eat it.

Why we love it?
The barbeque itself comes with four extra ingredients; spicy and sour sauce, chopped garlic, green chili, onion and minced garlic with black pepper in light oil. The extra ingredients are like the icing on the cake. They compliment the taste of the ribs like nothing else. It feels like the chef really experimented to see what is the best combination. Not only the chef, but the owner also wants to give the customers the top of the experience. Unlike other barbeque places, this restaurant has a very own smoke suction vent for each table, which is rare, and similar to an authentic Korean barbeque you would find in Korea.
